Prawn Chilly Fry

I have always wondered about the Agri-Kolis off the west coast of India . Overtime some parts of the Koli community, that settled in Mobai, now Bombay/Mumbai were converted to Christianity by their Portuguese rulers. The converted became the East Indians but still retained their old recipes, when it came to cooking.  So what better way to get to know another side of the EI community, than through their simple yet Spicy and delicious food.

Let's start with a very easy Agri-Koli prawn Chilli fry!

Ingredients
250gms prawns
1 medium sized potato sliced or diced small
3-4 cloves garlic chopped
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 tbsp Kashmiri chilli powder
1/2 tsp garam masala
1 tsp tamarind or kokum
Salt to taste
2 tbsp coriander
2 tbsp oil

Method
1. Heat oil in a pan. Add garlic and fry a bit.
2. Now add the prawns and potatoes and cook in a low flame until potatoes are almost done
3. Next add the turmeric, chilli powder and garam masala and fry a bit.
4. Now add salt to taste and garnish with chopped coriander.
5. Serve hot.
Optional- a dash of squeezed lemon could just add a little zing to it 😉.
Caution- don't overcook the potatoes as they would start to break up and you will end up with a mushy-pasty chilli fry.
